Panama

MaiYap is an award-winning Asian Latina mix-media artist and art instructor.  Her work emphasizes social and environmental awareness.  A master colorist with 25 years of experience, she paints in a variety of techniques, ranging from realistic flowers utilizing traditional brushes to landscapes and abstracts done exclusively with palette knives. Her latest projects explore her own identity in terms of reproductive justice and discrimination towards Asian Americans. 

She is the founder of Palette Knife Artists of Miami. She has a degree in Advertising and Graphic Design from the University of Georgia.  Her work has been exhibited in more than 100 galleries, museums and fairs in the United States, Panamá, Costa Rica, Korea, Morocco and China.  Among her most recent awards are first prize at Wynwood Biennial 2020, first prize at the NLAPW Biennial in Washington, DC, and finalist at the Norwegian Cruise Line & Nader Museum Award. In 2021 She was chosen as a juror for the prestigious Roberto Lewis national art contest in Panama. Her work is on permanent collection at The University of Miami, Florida International University, St Thomas University, Museo de Arte El Salvador and the Haegeumgang Museum in South Korea, among others.

A native of Panamá, she works and resides with her family in Miami, Florida.

Alex Urvina

Meet Alex, the vibrant Cuban/Ecuadorian artist born in the rich cultural tapestry of Venezuela. With a degree in Graphic Design from the Universidad José María Vargas in Caracas, Venezuela, Alex is a versatile mixed media artist, focusing on intuitive painting and environmental awareness.

Her artistic journey began at the tender age of 7 when her grandmother introduced her to an adult painting class. Throughout her teenage years, Alex explored various painting styles such as charcoal, soft pastels, aquarelle, black and colored inks, oils, and ventured into techniques like silk screen, block printing, and airbrush.

Currently residing in sunny Miami, Florida, with her husband and their furry companions, Alex enjoys the triathlon racing lifestyle while managing her wellness coaching business. Their two grown-up sons have embarked on their independent journeys.

Alex actively participates in collective exhibitions with her esteemed group, the Palette Knife Artists of Miami. Beyond the canvas, she engages in parallel projects involving helping others, chanting mantras, and teaching yoga.

Ana is a Cuban American artist residing in Miami Florida. The arts have always been special to her and she was exposed to music, museums, ballet, drawing as a young child. After a career in the aviation and construction industry she rediscovered her passion for the arts painting primarily with palette knives and mixed media. Being an advocate for social diversity and nature she promotes environmental awareness through her art.

Thanks to the Palette Knife Artists of Miami she enjoys artistic collaboration with fellow artists.

The first time Ardys was aware she could do anything with art was in the 4th grade when she was asked to help paint sets and she couldn’t understand why she was asked. She took a lot of art classes in High School and went on to major in Art at Florida State University and got a Master’s in Art Education.

She took a Ceramics class during her master’s at Florida State and fell in love with the craft. So she went on to take a year in Ceramics at Iowa State University under wonderful teachers. Her work has been featured in different art shows around the country since 1964 and she was also featured in the book “500 Teapots.”

Ardys’ journey with Palette Knife painting came after she retired from teaching and moved to Miami, where she took painting classes at Fairchild Gardens under MaiYap and became an active member of the Palette Knife Artists of Miami

Bonnie Masdeu

USA – Upstate, New York

Born in Upstate New York, Bonnie pursued education at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, specializing in Fashion Design and Illustration. During this time, she tutored fashion illustration. Professional experiences unfolded in the garment industry in New York, with roles as an illustrator and designer that involved international travel to Hong Kong, China, and Tai Pai, Taiwan.She relocated to Miami in 1994, where she worked for Ralph Lauren in Bal Harbor for a decade. Presently married with three stepchildren and three grandchildren; She currently assists at her husband’s Security Guard business.

She was asked to join the Palette Knife Group of Miami in 2017 which has led to participation in various exhibitions.

A nature enthusiast, the artist developed a hobby in birding, evolving into a keen interest in photography. Recognized with multiple photography awards,she holds memberships in esteemed organizations such as the Tropical Audubon Society, Audubon Florida, National Audubon Society, the National Wildlife Federation, Florida Wildlife Federation, the Nature Conservancy, and The Humane Society.

Operating as both a painter and amateur photographer, her work is showcased on Flickr. Live painting performances, event participation, mural creation, and collaboration with artist teams highlight their dynamic artistic journey. While initially working with acrylic paint, the artist currently focuses on water-soluble oil paints. Eumelia Castro

Eumelia Castro is a Venezuelan artist. From an early age, she showed interest in expressing herself through drawing, which motivated her to pursue university studies in Advertising and Graphic Design. Once graduated, she worked for more than 20 years as an illustrator and Art Director in renowned Advertising Agencies in Caracas, Venezuela, and in her own Advertising company.

Eumelia has been a self-taught artist who immigrated to the United States in 2002, living since then inMiami, Florida. Emigrating life meant a new beginning from which she has taken advantage to develop and expand her knowledge and techniques about painting in a diverse cultural environment and the availability of various artistic resources. In the field of Advertising, she experimented with techniques of Watercolor, Crayon, and Marker, which prompted her to experiment with oil and acrylic paints.

Throughout her professional life, Eumelia has been developing her style inspired by nature, the beauty and delicacy of women, using different tools that have allowed her to create soft textures and dynamic shapes. Eumelia has successfully exhibited her works in Galleries and Art Fairs in the United States, Belgium,  France, Spain, Italy, China, and Korea.

Initiating the artistic journey at the tender age of 8, Lark mother’s encouragement played a pivotal role, and the artist expresses immense gratitude for the foresight. Following high school, a significant milestone occurred with the attainment of a scholarship at the art institute. This marked a substantial leap into exploring new media and techniques. Continuous learning became a constant companion through numerous classes, workshops, and enriching associations, including the Palette Knife Artists of Miami.

With a profound affection for oil painting, the artist dedicated substantial effort to discover and articulate their voice within this medium. Sixty years later, the journey endures, reflecting an unwavering commitment to artistic growth and expression.

Magdalena S. Martinez, a native of Havana, Cuba, spent her secondary school years in Albany, N.Y. Her artistic journey commenced in Curacao, N.A., where she resided with her husband and three children. Under the guidance of Mr. Naguib Robert Mirza, she attended art classes from 1973 to 1984.

In May of 1980, Martinez showcased her work at Centro Pro Arte Curacao, N.A. Following Mr. Naguib R. Mirza’s pursuit of higher art education in Italy, she continued her artistic pursuits under the tutelage of Master Luigi Pinedo from 1984 to 1996. In 1995, her art was featured at the Kunsten Museum of Curacao NA. Martinez holds a deep connection to her artistic endeavors, viewing painting as akin to a dream. Through her art, she has discovered that true freedom resides only within the realm of dreams.

Susan Feldman

Susan has been an artist most of her life painting with pen & ink, watercolor on watercolor paper or Yupo, and oil paints.

The oils are applied on canvas with either a brush or palette knife lending a lot of texture to the subject. She studied art at Ohio State University, Columbus College of Arts & Design, and University of Cincinnati.

Susan favors a variety of subjects – landscape, still life, portraits, and abstract. For Susan…variety is truly “the spice of life”.
